How To Use The Wild Curl Hair Oils

As you are probably aware of, we have 5 different hair oils at The Wild Curl. Here we want to break down to you how to use them and share some best tips to get the maximum out of them.

Hair oil application

Hair type hair oils

We have three different hair oils depending on what is your hair type:

Each of our hair oils is crafted bearing in mind the structure and texture of the hair type it is meant for. If you are unsure of your curl type, visit our hair guide to find the perfect oil that fits for your curls. Below, we share some guidelines for your hair care routine, but of course, you can modify it as you find out what works best for you. However, try to follow the LOC (1st leave-in conditioner, 2nd hair oil, 3rd curl cream) or LOG (1st leave-in conditioner, 2nd hair oil, 3rd gel) method as you modify your curl routine for yourself.

Wavy hair oil

wavy hair oil

Our Wavy hair oil is meant for naturally wavy hair between 2a -c. It gives moisture and helps with curl alignment reducing frizzy hair. It contains light oils, such as jojoba, sweet almond, grapeseed, and argan oil not to weigh your hair down. To maximize your wave definition, follow these steps:

1. Wash your hair as you normally would and rinse thoroughly.

2. Smooth your hair with conditioner so it is completely coated and then detangle with your fingers (avoid using a brush if possible).

3. Try the “squish to condish” method.

a. Flip your head upside down so your hair is hanging freely.

b. Cup your hands and fill them with water.

c. Pile your curls into the water, bring your hands up to scrunch your curls.

At this point you can choose either to dry your hair (Use microfiber towel or 100% cotton t-shirt to reduce friction not to create frizzy hair!) or to apply finishing product on soaking wet hair (It has been said that this works best for wavy hair, however, it is up to you what you are more comfortable with and what works the best for you).

4. Use leave-in conditioner (optional).

5. Apply the Wavy hair oil to seal in the moisture from conditioning. Pour few drops on your palms and rub them only to the ends of your hair.

6. Use gel, mousse or curl cream to apply more hold (optional).

When applying the products (steps 5-6) keep scrunching your curls and do this preferably your head upside down to add more volume.

7. Air dry your hair or use a hair dryer with cold air and medium speed. Always use a diffuser to minimize frizz. If possible, dry your hair only 70% and air dry the rest. Keep scrunching your waves up with your fingers.

8. Flip your head upside down and shake your roots to gain more hair volume.

Curly hair oil

Coily hair oil

Our Curly hair oil is meant for curly hair type between 3a-c. It provides added moisture and strength by penetrating the hair shaft. It contains oils, like coconut oil and avocado oil, that are known for their great moisturizing properties. To maximize your curl definition, follow these steps:

1. Wash your hair as you normally would and rinse thoroughly (avoid over shampooing, since curly hair tends to be very dry. Try to shampoo your hair only 2-3 times per week the most).

2. Smooth your hair with conditioner so it is completely coated and then detangle with your fingers (If you have more tight curls use a brush but be gentle not to cause any breakage).

3. Dry your hair with microfiber towel or 100% cotton t-shirt to reduce friction not to create frizzy hair

4. Use leave-in conditioner.

5. Apply the Curly hair oil to seal in the added moisture. Pour few drops on your palms and rub them only to the dry ends of your hair.

6. Use gel, mousse or curl cream to apply more hold (optional). Align and manipulate your curls as you want them to settle down.

When applying the products (steps 5-6) keep scrunching your curls and do this preferably your head upside down or curls flipped to aside to add more volume.

7. Air dry your hair or use a hair dryer with cold air and medium speed. Always use a diffuser to minimize frizz. If possible, dry your hair only 70% and air dry the rest. Keep scrunching your curls up with your fingers.

8. Pick your roots with a wide tooth comb to gain more hair volume.

Kinky hair oil

Kinky hair oil

Kinky hair is the driest curly hair type there is and therefore, needs lots of added moisture. Our Kinky hair oil is meant for hair type between 4a-c. It helps retain moisture in the hair and scalp while increasing the hydration level and reducing dryness in your hair. This oil contains thick texture oils, such as castor and apricot oil, that have good properties to lock in added moisture. To reduce dryness in your hair and easy your detangling and styling process, follow these steps:

1. Section your hair into 4-6 areas using clips (This makes the handling way easier).

2. Pre-poo each section with hair oil and finger detangle each section as you go along. Use our Kinky hair oil or just a plain coconut oil (Let the pre-poo treatment sit overnight or at least one hour).

3. Shampoo your scalp thoroughly.

4. Condition each section separately and try to distribute the product well to the ends of your hair.

5. Add your deep conditioner to each section and use a wide tooth comb to detangle each section. If possible, cover your hair with a shower cap or a plastic bag and let the treatment sit at least for 30 min.

6. Rinse each section and twist

7. Use the LOC method for each section and twist them again.

a. L → Leave-in conditioner to add moisture

b. O → Hair oil: use our Kinky hair oil. The product latches onto the outside of the hair fiber preventing any moisture to escape.

c. C → Curl Cream to add hold and definition

8. Style as you see preferable, whether you are gonna go with twists or curly fro it is gonna look fabulous and feel super soft after the treatment!

As mentioned earlier, type 4 curls are very dry and therefore needs added moisture. You can use our Kinky hair oil with days that are not washed days as well. Apply a leave-in conditioner of your choice and seal the moisture in with our hair oil. To reach better results, try hot oil treatment with our hair oils.

Intensive treatments

Both our intensive treatments, Charm and Fortune oil are to use 2 to 3 times a week and they are suitable for all hair types. Let the treatment sit overnight to get the maximum benefit out of it before washing it off. These intensive treatments are good to do the night before your hair wash day. That way you also get yourself a pre-shampooing done making it a win-win. Also, you can use both intensive treatments at the same time!
