Sulphate, Paraben And Silicone Free: A Simple (But Complete) Guide

Find out the truth about sulphates, parabens and silicones and why are they bad for curly hair. In the curly hair community, everyone is talking about using products that are free from these nasties but before following headlessly the rest of the crowd, let's find out what these ingredients are and what they do to our hair.

What are sulphates and why are they bad for your hair?

Sulphates are surfactants, which means that they attract both oil and water making them efficient cleaning agents. They are also responsible for the foamy lather that usually shampoos create. This kind of surfactants tends to be a bit too efficient and ends up stripping the hair from its natural oils, which may lead to dry hair and hair breakage. So leave the super foamy bubbly shampoos on the supermarket and pick a low-lather shampoo or no lather cleanser. The Wild Curl Shampoo is a low-lather shampoo that uses Cocoamidopropyl Betaine that is a plant-derived, mild non-ionic surfactant that is gentle and kind to fragile curls 🙏

What are parabens and why are they bad for your hair?

Parabens are widely used preservatives in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products that are used primarily for their good bactericidal and fungicidal properties. Whilst they make the product last longer, they can also enter your body through your scalp. With prolonged exposure, they might cause possible health effects. As these preservatives are added to the majority of the high street hair care products, the exposure is guaranteed to be with higher quantities. They say that multiple parabens exposure needs further investigation to know all the possible health effects. This said, meanwhile we can easily keep using products that contain 0 of these unknown nasties 👌

What are silicones and why are they bad for your hair?

Silicones are synthetic polymers that have hydrophobic properties, which means that they help retain moisture by creating an impenetrable seal. They are the ones giving you that feeling of an amazing moisturized slip! But in reality, it's just coating the strands. Using silicones on a daily basis can cause product buildup and eventually weigh your curls down.

In a nutshell, all the above reasons are why we at the Wild Curl do not add these into our hair care products. Sulphates, parabens and silicones are just unnecessary chemicals added to the products. They are widely used in the hair care and beauty industry as they make the products feel good at a low cost. But we are not here just to make the products feel good, we are here for the long term goal. Getting our curls popping and healthy is our number one priority and we do not take shortcuts 💪. All our curly hair care products are free from all the nasties like parabens, silicones and sulphates.
