Is Apricot Oil Good For Curly Hair?

As a curly girl, you might struggle to find hair solutions that work for you. Your porous curls are prone to dryness and breakage, but a lot of oils leave your hair feeling heavy and greasy.

Have you ever heard of apricot oil?

Many people praise the moisturizing benefits of apricot oil for skin and hair, including those with curls and waves. Read on to find out more about this vitamin-rich oil and just what it can do for your curly hair.

What is Apricot Oil?

Apricot oil is produced from the seed inside of an apricot. This is not the big pit you see when you eat an apricot. It is the small, almond-like kernel that lives inside of the stone or pit.

The kernels are cold-pressed to extract the oil. This is an essential part of the process because other extraction methods, such as those that use heat, can damage the precious antioxidants in the oil.

Apricot oil is revered for its high concentration of fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. All of which come with their own unique health benefits.

Apricot oil is found in the following products: Kinky oil

The Curly Hair Benefits of Apricot Oil

Apricot oil is jam-packed with so many great vitamins and nutrients to promote healthy, luscious locks. Some of these include:

  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E
  • Iron
  • Calcium
  • Magnesium
  • Linoleic acid
  • Linolenic acid
  • Oleic acids
  • Potassium

When added to hair, this transparent yellow-gold oil not only increases shine and softness but has several health benefits as well.

Promotes Growth

One of the biggest benefits of using apricot oil is encouraging hair growth. Linoleic and linolenic acids promote scalp health which creates a healthy environment conducive to strong, fast-growing hair.

Then there are all the vitamins to consider. Vitamin A is essential for cell growth throughout the body, including hair. It also encourages the production of natural scalp oils that contribute to head health.

Apricot oil is packed with vitamin E. In one study this vitamin was responsible for increasing hair growth by 34.5 percent after eight months of use.

Inhibits Hair Loss

Vitamin E is also known to reduce oxidative stress which can play a role in alopecia. Its anti-inflammatory properties help soothe and heal the scalp to reduce hair loss due to irritation. After all, a happy scalp equals a healthy head of hair.

Strengthens Hair

Iron is a leading player when it comes to hair growth and strength. When applied topically it helps maintain follicle health to prevent hair loss and thinning.

The vitamin C in apricot oil works in conjunction with the iron to enhance its absorption into the roots. It also blocks free radicals that contribute to hair aging and breakage

Moisturize

The porous nature of curly hair makes it susceptible to moisture loss due to evaporation. This can leave curls feeling limp, dry, and brittle. Apricot oil creates a barrier around your hair shaft that prevents moisture from getting out.

The omega-9 fatty acids in the oil draw moisture in from the surrounding environment to reinforce the hydration barrier. Who knew that humidity could be a curly girl's best friend?

Studies of apricot oil show it has been used to effectively alleviate skin conditions, such as dandruff. Use it after your normal wash day routine, to keep your hair looking fresh and healthy all day long.

How to Use Apricot Oil for Hair

Depending on your normal hair care routine, apricot oil can be used before, during, or after washing.

Pre-Wash

Treat yourself to a nice scalp massage with hot or cold apricot oil. Then leave your hair to sit for 30 to 40 minutes and wash as normal. You can also use apricot oil as a hair mask and leave it overnight.

Or, use it as a base for your favorite essential oils such as lavender, peppermint, orange, and bergamot. Rub it into your scalp to help you relax after a long day at work.

In Shower

Add a bit of apricot oil to your favorite shampoo or conditioner, for an invigorating shower experience. The oil will calm your scalp and help lock shower moisture into your curls.

Post-Wash

The lightweight nature of apricot oil will prevent your hair from feeling greasy or heavy, so you can absolutely use it after a shower. Mix it in with your styling products for added shine and luster. Or if you prefer the natural look, use it by itself.

The Downsides of Apricot Oil

There are very few downsides to using apricot oil. Like with all hair products you should make sure to do a patch test to check for any skin allergies.

Apricot oil also tends to leave a coating on your hair, especially when it isn't washed regularly. For those who follow a more relaxed washing regimen, focus your usage on the scalp and avoid overdoing it on the strands.

For those who do wish to use the oil on their hair, make sure to cleanse your hair regularly with a lightweight shampoo. Long-term buildup can lead to tangling, dullness, heaviness.
